Gravel Ride. Saturday 7:30 am. Meet at parking lot of Aspen Fitness (72nd & 370)

It looks like it is that time of year when we will be seeing a lot of gravel roads. To be honest we are a little pumped about it. If you find yourself pumped about riding gravel but do not have a cross bike, we happen to have a fleet of demo CX bikes that you may borrow if you like. Also, Mountain Bikes are welcome as well.

This will be a no drop ride and all ride levels are welcome. If you would like to use a bike please contact miah@trekomaha.com and we can get you set up. All borrowed bikes can be picked up the day before.

The entrance is well marked into the park,just look for the Bellevue Volunteer Fire Dept Training Facility entrance. Turn in and take your first left into the Swanson Park parking lot. Once you are ready to ride, follow the signs north into the woods where the trails start.

Gravel Ride

Attention gravel road riders. We will be riding this Saturday Sept. 24th 7:30 am. We will meet in the Aspen Fitness parking lot on 72nd and 370. We will go about 25 miles and it will be a no drop. Cross bikes work the best for this type of riding but MTBs work great as well.

If you have not ridden gravel before be sure to join us to see what you have been missing. it might not seem like this would be a good time, but it is, trust us.

MTB trip to Landhal

Hey all, We have something really cool planned for all of you Mountain bikers. We are taking the shop Sprinter van on FRIDAY JULY 1st, to Landhal Park in Blue Springs, MO to ride some of the best singletrack in the Midwest. If you would like to join us here is what you need to do. Give us $25 and be one of the first twelve to sign up and you are in.

Here is what your $25 gets you: Transportation to the park leaving from the shop, great company and conversation on the way to said park. You will be shelling out for your own meals, which there will likely be about 3 or so.

You will need to be at the shop, 8410 s. 73rd plaza, by 5:30am and we will load the van and trailer and be gone by 6am. We will return later that same evening as tired, bruised and happy little Mountain Bikers. All skill levels are welcome, the trails are challenging but everyone can ride at their own pace due to the ample amount of time spent there.

So You Want To Be a Leader

Riding season is here and the Trek Bicycle Store of Omaha (Papillion) is looking for able people to help us out with our group rides.

This Summer, every Tuesday night, we will have THREE rides leaving the shop. There will be an A group which will cover a distance of 50 miles 20-22 avg mph. a B group that will ride 35-40 miles at 16-18 avg mph, and new this year, a C group which will ride from the shop through safe streets to the Keystone trail.

What we ask of our leaders is to make sure the group is enjoying the ride and making sure that nobody gets dropped from the group on our B and C rides. We need someone who can show leadership in emergency situations and someone who can represent our shop. In return we would throw you a great discount at the shop for your help.

The B group will start this coming Tuesday, and the C group will start once we find the right person to lead it.

Ride the Divide Tomorrow Night

RIDE THE DIVIDE, AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILM,

COMING TO OMAHA MARCH 15

Ride The Divide, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the world’s toughest mountain bike race, will stop in Omaha on Tuesday, March 15 at the Aksarben Cinema. The event will be a fundraiser for OmahaBikes.org.

The film chronicles the story of several mountain bikers who attempt the 2,711-mile race named the Tour Divide along the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. The movie was named the best adventure film at the 2010 Vail Film Festival.

This film has become an instant cycling classic, and made its television premiere in September on the Documentary Channel. But the Adventure Cycling Association said the film should be seen on the big screen: “The cinematography is stunning!” Added UpaDowna, “Ride The Divide is one of the most inspiring real cycling movies … in a long time.” Epic Riding summed the movie up as follows: “In a word? Fantastic. In more words? Moving, funny, inspiring.”

Ride The Divide embraces the inspiring stories of three of the racers who experience the immense mountain beauty and small-town culture as they attempt to pedal from Banff, Canada, to a small, dusty crossing on the Mexican border. There’s Mike, a 40-year-old family man who uses this challenge to chart a new course in life; Matthew, a leader in extreme endurance racing who’s competing for his fifth time; and Mary, the ﬁrst female rider to race this route. As they set out, they will attempt to accomplish what very few have been able to. Over the course of a few weeks, they’ll attempt to climb over 200,000 vertical feet along the backbone of the Rocky Mountains.

They’ll experience mental breakdowns, treacherous snow, hellacious blisters, and total fatigue. Above all, they’ll race with no support – at times in total isolation. The tests of endurance and the accomplished moments throughout Ride the Divide prompt us to reﬂect on our inner desires to live life to the fullest.

Ride The Divide made its debut at the Vail Film Festival and was named the best adventure film at the event. Outside Magazine proclaimed that “(t)he toughest bike race in the world is not in France,” after reviewing the film.

Yoga Tomorrow

Yoga For Cyclists

If your New Year's resolution was to hang out the bike shop more we have you covered. Starting Wednesday January 12th, from 7-8pm. . We are offering a FREE 5 week Yoga course aimed specifically at cyclists and the flexibility issues that we may encounter or wish to avoid. This class will run the same time on the following 4 Wednesdays.

All that you need to bring is your own yoga mat and an open mind. This will be great for anyone that is a cyclists that has wanted to try Yoga, come try with other beginners. Even if you are experienced this is a great chance to take a class that focuses on the sport that you love.

We also want to remind you that we are offering trainer classes 2 times a week. Tuesday-6-8pm and Saturday 8-10am. We are going to do our part to keep you in shape this Winter.

Maintenance Classes in November

Well you asked for it and now we are delivering. We will be having a maintenance class on Wednesday November 3rd and Wednesday November 17th, both at 6:30 pm. The classes will cover the following:

November 3rd: tire changing clinic. Don't get stuck at the side of the road again. do not make that embarrassing call to your spouse. This class will allow to finish the rides that you start so you can live your life.

November 17th: Roadside maintenance clinic. This will cover various other issues that can stop your rides, derailleur adjustments, brake adjustments, etc.

the classes will be taught by Jim Maaske (pictured above). Jim has been in the bike industry for longer than he can remember. Also he is a great guy.

Big Red Ride Saturday Oct. 16th

Two things we love about Fall are the great biking weather and college football. We are combining both. On Saturday October 16th we are having a pre-game ride at 12pm that will be followed by the Texas-Nebraska game at 2:30. We will have great stuff to consume including Lowell and Cora's homemade chili, beer from Lucky Bucket Brewery, Eileen's Cookies and Jimmy John's.

The road ride will leave the shop at noon. We will also be having a mountain bike ride that will meet at Swanson Park at noon as well.

Breast Cancer Awareness Ride

Join us on October 9 for the fifth annual Trek Women Breast Cancer Awareness Ride. We'll have 10- and 25-mile routes available, both of which will be almost entirely on paved recreation trails. Both routes will be fully supported, with food and refreshments available before and after. The ride is open to riders of all abilities, women, men and children.

Registration is $25 and can be completed here or on the day of the event. All registration fees are donated directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Each rider will receive a Trek gift bag and a chance to win one of dozens of prizes.

That's right folks, we are adding a new night for our trainer rides. We will start having a trainer night on Tuesday night starting at 6pm and going until 8pm. We will continue to hold our Saturday morning trainer ride for anyone who wishes to get in a Saturday morning workout. These rides are designed for the everyday cyclist from the novice to the expert. Please come out and join us for some cycling fun and maybe a cheesy 80's flick. Bring your trainer and climbing block if you have one, we will have some available.

Saturday Morning Maintenance Clinics

Starting in November, Highgear will offer free classes on do-it-yourself bike maintenance. Each Saturday-morning session will begin at 10 and last approximately one hour.
The schedule:
Nov. 7 - Ladies' flat-tire repair
Nov. 14 - Open flat-tire repair
Nov. 21 - Ladies' drivetrain maintenance
Nov. 28 - Open drivetrain maintenance
Dec. 5 - Open brakes adjustment
Dec. 12 - Open derailleur adjustment

--For flat-repair classes, please bring your own front wheel, a pair of tire levers and a pump (if you have them).
--Drivetrain classes will cover basic chain/cassette/chainring checking and cleaning.Space is limited (6 to 7 per class), so pre-registration is required. Contact Andy by email (andy@highgaromaha.com) to sign up.

New Hours!

Starting now, Highgear is switching to our winter hours. We will be open Monday - Thursday from 11a.m.-7p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10a.m. to 6p.m. and Sunday from 12p.m. to 4p.m.
Also, on Tuesday October 20th, we will be open only from 5-7p.m. due to our annual inventory that day. We will reopen with regular hours on Wednesday the 21st.

Well, well, well. I woke up at 6:30a.m. on Saturday and looked outside. Then I got back in bed. Snow, lots and lots of snow. Of course this would be the case, given the BCAR was scheduled to take off that day at 10a.m.!! After a few minutes of a self-delivered pep talk, I headed up and out to set up for the ride.
That's when the calls and texts started pouring in. "Snow?! Is this thing still happening?" "There's no way we're riding, right?!" "What's the reschedule date?" And, my consistent, yet unbelievable response was, "Yup, ride's on. See you out there! Bring your parka!" And, miraculously, ride we did!
Chris, Andy, an myself were the first ones out there. We first had to strategically park the Sprinter Van to serve as a snow/wind block. Then the two tents were set up as well as, most importantly, our fire pit! That ended up being a life (or at least toe) saver!
Slowly but surely, people started showing up. I couldn't believe it! I ended up sending Chris and Andy out on their bikes to do a quick recon of the course. They got out about a mile or so and turned around. Upon their arrival all they could talk about is how bad of an idea this ride was. "I can't feel my toes or fingers!" "My drivetrain is frozen!" "My brakes are frozen!" Hmmmm. At this point I debated whether or not to just call the ride. But, the riders just kept coming! And, so did channel 6 with a camera! I got a quick interview out of the way and then took a poll from the riders. My option for them was: either not to ride at all, or enjoy a quick out and back shortened trip towards Big Lake guided by Chris and Andy. And, sure enough, ride they did!
There were about 25 riders overall and another handful of supporters who registered but decided not to ride. I was pretty happy with the turnout, considering the weather!
Thanks sooooo much to all of you who volunteered and rode for this great cause!

Breast Cancer Awareness Ride!!!

We have a growing list of people who have already registered online for the great ride coming up on October 10th, at 10:00a.m. Please add your name to those who are riding for the cure and join us for either a 10 or 25 mile bike ride. The registration is $25 and every last penny of that goes directly to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation!! (www.bcrfcure.org)

Otherwise, you can register at The Trek Bicycle Store of Omaha on 72nd and Jones the night before from 6-8pm, or the day of starting at 8:30a.m. in the Rick's Boatyard Cafe parking area downtown at 345 Riverfront Drive.
Both routes will leave from the Rick's Cafe parking lot at 10:00 a.m. and will head out over the B.K. Bridge and then head south towards the Wabash Trailhead. This is a great family-friendly route that is easy to follow and fun for everyone. And, most importantly, you're supporting a great cause!!
TREK is giving away some sweet stuff this year too, for those of you that aren't just happy helping raise money for the BCRF. :) Prizes and giveaways include: socks, t-shirts, and more! The big prize this year is an amazing TREK Travel Trip!!!! Oh man, I hope I get that one.

Please join us for the annual Trek Women Breast Cancer Awareness Ride -- October 10th at 10 a.m.

This is the third annual ride aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer prevention, treatment and screening. Last year, the 25,000 riders who participated in Trek WSD rides raised more than $70,000 to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
